The Khotang Village Trek

Grade           Length
Moderate           14 days

Description
Looking for a trek that is "off the beaten path"? Venture where foreigners seldom go. Join Nanda and his staff for a trek across Khotang to visit his village, Bakachol. Khotang lies in east central Nepal directly south of the Mount Everest area. The district is remote; no roads penetrate its borders, and the local people pursue very traditional lifestyles.

The trek starts with a flight from Kathmandu to a dirt airstrip atop a ridge at Lamidanda. After two days trekking through intensively farmed hill country, you will arrive at Aeiselikharka, a most photogenic hill town. Several more hours walking and you arrive in Bakachol at Nanda's brother's farm. The village welcome will amaze you. Nanda, his brother, and neighbors will demonstrate traditional farming methods, and a visit to the local school and the office of village development council are customary. After Bakachol, the trek proceeds northwest through even more remote country as the trail descends to cross the Dudh Kosi (river) and then climbs toward the trek's end at Phaplu. The route passes through countryside populated mostly by the Sherpa people the last day before Phaplu. A half-hour flight from Phaplu returns you to Kathmandu.
