The Real Nepal Trek
Grade Length
Strenuous 28 - 32 days, depending on option
Description
Experience the real Nepal! For the first week we will trek north across Khotang toward Solukhumbu, the Mount Everest area. Khotang is a remote district few foreigners trek, offering a fascinating look at an area little touched by the outside world. Along the trail you will glimpse the high Himalayas to the north and pass through the villages, culture and daily activities of the Rai and other peoples. A highlight of the trek is a two-day visit to Bakachol, home village for several of our staff.
At the start of the second week, we join the main trekking route into the Solukhumbu district, site of Mt. Everest and the home of the highland people, the Sherpa. Much of this region is within the Sagarmatha National Park. You may encounter Himalayan thar, musk deer, different types of the most beautiful pheasants, and other wild life. The spectacular view of that most picturesque mountain, Amadablam dominates the landscape beyond the Sherpa regional center of Namche Bazar. One day beyond Namche, you will visit the world famous Buddhist monastery of Tengaboche. And, a day farther brings you to Pheriche or Dingboche, the gateway villages to several high valleys radiating north toward Mount Everest, Lhotse, Imjatse, and other extreme peaks.
Beyond these two villages, one can choose a variety of options for trekking: we have listed itineraries for several options. The Imjatse option includes an ascent to the summit of Imjatse (Island Peak) at 20,330 feet. The summit, less than 4 miles from the top of Mount Everest, offers an amazing panorama of the Himalayas in all directions. On the Everest Base Camp option, you will marvel at the close up view of Mt. Everest and its neighbors from the rocky summit of Kalapathar and from the base of Mt. Everest. The Gokyo option explores an immense, glaciated high valley and includes a scramble up Gokyo Ri for one of the premier views of high Himalayas. Our Cho La option combines much of the Everest Base Camp and Gokyo options, linking these two areas with a trek over Cho La pass at nearly 18,000 feet! Pricing varies by option.
